Single Source Project
Situation
The company Content Rules was looking for contractors to assist them with a project for Tech Company. Tech Company produces product guides for their customers, but updates are required frequently and the content strategy that they had in place was insufficient. Tech Company needed their current content to be evaluated and updated. After that, a single source solution could be implemented so that updates could be done once, and they would carry over to multiple platforms.
Task
We focused on conducting a thorough analysis of Tech Company’s inventory for both their software and hardware products and publications, and we applied categories to each section of content. We then identified principal phrases and keywords of easily searchable metadata to create our single source solution to improve the user experience.
Action
Using the data that we acquired through our analysis, we used conditional displays to control what information was shown in either PDF document and what was shown online. Additionally, a CSS stylesheet was used to create visual continuity for all outputs. We completed thorough re-rewrites of the content using Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA) in the Tech Company’s server to meet industry standards, and we provided a Proof of Concept to Company Rules to win a contract from them.
Results
If Company Rules decides to award us the contract, we will create a single source solution for Tech Company that will allow them to do the following with their product server:
- Update content once across multiple mediums.
- Optimize search engine performance.
- Provide print as well as online guides for customers.
- Create consistent messaging while the server is accessed by multiple users at a time.
